What’s an appropriate response when something like a tsunami or an earthquake strike and devastate some part of the world?
In addition to the very practical and critical things that able people and countries can do in the way of rescue and emergency services, focused attention, or open-hearted prayer for the victims and their families comes to mind; such as for example the Metta prayer (see below). Some people might feel that victims cannot be benefitted by the force of our intention or the mental energy of supportive prayer directed at victims of any sort of disaster or difficult situation. I disagree but I cannot say here why, scientifically, for that you can look elsewhere, such as at Lynne McTaggart’s work.
So today after the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, whose effects are being felt elsewhere as well, maybe we can take some time, as individuals or in groups, to direct from our hearts a great wave of healing, comforting, loving energy in the direction of those who suffered and who are suffering there, and, while we are at it, those who are suffering or faced with small or large obstacles anywhere at all.
This does not mean we become frantic and hysterical, since those are unhelpful, sentimental, responses. On the other hand, to ignore the situation and carry on as though nothing, is a precious opportunity missed, since being mindful of many others’ situations is always a great way to become free of the stagnant confines of suffocating self-absorption and self-reference, and always calls forth everyone's higher angels.
